Throughout history, cosmetics have experienced various degrees
of popularity, but it’s safe to say that their prevalence
has only grown in the last hundred years. The term applies to
anything that is meant to enhance the outward appearance of the
human body and, in a society that is increasingly occupied with
appearance, it’s no wonder that they’re growing in
popularity.
Among the many items, the term cosmetics can refer to:
• Creams
• Perfumes
• Powders
• Lipsticks
• Mascara
• Shampoos
Despite their popularity, cosmetics have had their own share
of controversy. In the US many companies still test their products
on animals, despite the pressure from animal rights activists.
The UK and Belgium have successfully put an end to all animal
product-testing, with the rest of the European Union following
suit in 2009.
